The standards outline how to design, create, and operate a structured cabling system, which means that the system is made up of a number of distinct sub-systems or blocks, each with its own set of performance characteristics. Within a unified communication system, the blocks are organized hierarchically. For example, a workgroup LAN block has lower performance requirements than a network backbone block, which typically requires high-performance fiber-optic cable. High-speed networking technologies such as Gigabit Ethernet, as well as advanced cable types such as Category 6 and Category 7 twisted pair cable, are now supported by the standards.
